Day 63, Portrait 17

On Friday I sat with Marina for 25 minutes. It was my second attempt, because the day before Misael and I got shut down by Asian goth kid who sat for almost 2 hours. Catalina sat that day. The experience really can’t be explained eloquently. It was beautiful, surreal, magical, and hopeful that there’s amazing-ness in this world. Waiting in line both days was much a part of the performance itself. I met some really kind people, I recognized one from the flickr portraits. It was going to be her 28th time sitting with her. A personal performance for herself. I thought of the beauty of all of this. Looking at Marina while waiting in line was too much at times. It felt like she was this higher being in a white dress. My heart was in my throat when the guy before me left the seat.

All the things I thought I was going to tell Marina pretty much left once I sat down. I wanted to hug her, comfort her, play with her face and tell her everything is okay. I felt like there’s this amazing thing waiting for all of us. I thought of someone I love and cried. After that I really zoned out. I noticed from my peripheral vision an elderly man walking towards me, then the security guard taking him out. I walked out after a few more minutes, and I fell in love with myself again. Best feeling in the world.

An inquiry into the new phenomenon driven by our intensifying ability to exchange and circulate self images has driven an inquiry into one’s ability to capture and present one’s image and present the self as one wants to be seen.
In the context of Trinidad & Tobago’s Erotic Art Week 2009 and 2010, Rodell pushed this inquiry into the realm of how people imaged themselves as erotic, and how willing they might be to share these images. He created “the Photobooth”; a small, temporary studio space that provided visitors with privacy and a remote control that triggered a stationary camera. With their signed permission, the images that participants captured of themselves were exhibited to the public the following night. “the Photobooth” will now become a touring installation work.

I Heart Collaborative Art - THEME #2: SELF PERCEPTION

THEME #2: SELF PERCEPTION

Last week I proposed that as a new project for the iheartmyart community that we try and create a visual dialogue through the digital space that we share.

Each session of I Heart Collaborative Art will be a themed session where the iheartmyart community can then use Tumblr’s photo reply function to post creative responses. All forms of art are acceptable; whether that is a painting, photography, sculpture, video or text.

If you have the chance to collaborate on an artwork with another artist then that is even better.

THEME #1: MEMORY (click to see last week’s theme)

THEME #2: SELF PERCEPTION

Any other ideas for themes? I am open to suggestions.

Also, don’t forget to sign up for the Iheartmyart mailing list.
