Kupka’s Defiance is “an overwhelming dark colossus in a snowswept desert, [… ] thus semi-stone giant protruding into a gloomy atmosphere, in a wild isolation dominating cold dark waters and the heavy lines of the snow-swept wilderness in fantastic flashes, it has much stubborn strength, and a suffocating suggesti-veness” — K.
