Františec Kupka, Path of Silence, 1902, Aquatint touched with guache on paper, 34.8 x 34.5 cm.
“Františec Kupka began to work on the cycle Path of Silence at the beginning of the twentieth century. In different versions fantastic idols and pagan fetishes dominated dusky night landscapes. On the sheet Path of Silence a solitary pilgrim stands on a path lined with endless rows of sphinxes. Every small step forward means another question. A man with his head bowed in thought cannot see the glowing starry horizon, symbolising the possibility of a way out and understanding.” — Otto M. Urban, p. 286.
